07.07.10 A Peek at Jackie Freedman's Picture Book...
Jackie Freedman is busy on a new picture book. She sent some
images that illustrate her process, and the following comments.
Thanks for sharing Jackie; very inspiring work!
"I've completed nine double-page spreads on "Four Bright Lights",
and have started on number 10, which will bring the finished art
to the halfway mark."

"(Below) are the shots of dummy pages 3 & 4 (finished art shown
above). They were done on tracing paper, and as you can see,
the drawing is much looser, even though it was rendered with the
same media. There are a few changes, such as removal of the
sign on the lamp-post, because historically, the anti-Semitism
was not that overt in the 1850's. It took other, subtler forms like
job and housing discrimination."

"Just as an extra note, what you see as the text on the dummy
pages, has been changed. After much hammering out by the
editor and me, the re-write for the finish will be more direct.
In addition to artwork, I had to have a finger in that pie, too,
because by knowing the size and quantity of the text, I could
more accurately plan my design and layout around it."
